Content Providers Buying More WDM Gear
Internet content providers including Google (News - Alert), YouTube, and MySpace bought $204 million worth of optical network hardware in 2007, and will increase buying steadily over the next five years, say researchers at Infonetics Research (News - Alert). Those purchases constitute part of the 14 percent of all optical gear that is bought by enterprises for their own internal use.
About 86 percent of the $13.9 billion spent on optical hardware market in 2007 came from service providers, as you would expect.
Top enterprise buyer categories include government, finance, utilities, and education and research organizations, Infonetics says.
“Non service provider verticals, which represent roughly one of every seven dollars invested in optical equipment, buy mostly metro wave division multiplexing equipment," says Michael Howard (News - Alert), Infonetics Research principal analyst.
Overall, Internet content provider spending on optical network hardware is forecast to jump 61 percent in the six years between 2006 and 2011.
The government vertical represents roughly a quarter of all optical network hardware spending by enterprises and organizations.
