Now showing on Mediacom: County meetings, events

Nov 10, 2008 (The McDowell News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Folks who are on the Mediacom cable TV system now can see an improved county government channel.
For almost a year, customers of Charter Communications have been able to receive improved programming on McDowell County's government channel on channel 15. But due to technical limitations, the county was not able to improve the programming on the access channel 10 on the Mediacom system.

However, thanks to the cooperation of county and Mediacom officials, the same improved programming that has been available to Charter's customers is now available to subscribers of Mediacom's service.

McDowell County Commissioners have talked about making this improvement for several months. When the original goal of interconnecting the Charter and Mediacom systems became impractical, Mediacom proposed an alternative.

The Mediacom system, which is available in Nebo, Dysartsville, and Glenwood, serves approximately 2,000 customers. Those people will now be able to see regularly scheduled programming such as County Commission meetings, programs from the McDowell Senior Center, as well as informative messages that play in between the videos. The channel features information from McDowell County agencies such as the Senior Center and the library as well as community groups such as the McDowell Arts Council Association and Hospice of McDowell County.

Maggie Blythe, Mediacom's senior manager of government relations, said she was pleased with the service provision and the improved service now available.

"We are pleased that our customers can now view enhanced local programming from McDowell County," said Blythe. "Anytime there can be cooperative action between the county and the company, the residents are the ones who really benefit."

Ashley Wooten, assistant to the county manager, explained that residents should look at reprogramming their television sets for channel 10 if needed. Since channel 10 has lacked programming, some televisions may have skipped the channel.

Persons with questions about the programming on Mediacom's channel 10 should contact Ashley Wooten at 652-7121. Questions about Mediacom's services should be directed to the company's customer support line at 1 (800) 946-5388.
