Chile launches anti-marijuana campaign

(EFE Ingles Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Santiago, Nov 2 (EFE).- The Chilean government will initiate an unprecedented campaign against marijuana use because of the fact that young people here have a low appreciation of the physical damage the drug can cause, National Drug Control Council, or Conace, chief Maria Teresa Chadwick said in an interview published Sunday by the El Mercurio newspaper.

With the slogan "Be intelligent again. Don't smoke marijuana," the campaign will be launched Sunday night and will run for 45 days in a series of television and local radio ads, by means of which Conace seeks to cause parents and kids to think about the matter and to dissuade young people from consuming the drug.

Recently, "the banalization of the effects of marijuana use and also an incorrect interpretation of its therapeutic potential, has contributed to reducing the perception of risk among youths," Chadwick said.

The campaign seeks "to open up reflection on marijuana and its effects, above all with respect to the fact that it's addictive, just like other drugs," the Conace director said.

Some 16 percent of Chilean high school students said that they had smoked pot within the past year and just 4 in 10 think that frequent use of the drug is harmful, according to a Conace study of illegal drugs in schools.

Between 2005 and 2007, the perception that there is a large risk in trying the drug once or twice fell from 40 percent of respondents to 30 percent, while the perception of risk from frequent use - once or twice a week - fell from 52 percent of respondents to 39 percent over the same period.

However, according to Conace figures, 70 percent of the people in treatment for problematic use of drugs began their drug use with marijuana. EFE
