Poland's unemployment rate drops to 9.6 percent in June

(Associated Press WorldStream Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WARSAW, Poland_Poland's unemployment rate dropped to 9.6 percent in June from 10 percent the previous month, according to government statistics released Friday.

The Central Statistics Office said that 1.45 million people in the country of 38 million were registered as jobless at the end of June _ some 70,000 fewer than in May.

The office did not give a reason for the dip in unemployment, but the rate often falls in the summer due to an increase in seasonal work, such as strawberry picking, construction, forestry and farming.

The jobless rate in Poland _ the largest of the formerly communist eastern European countries that have joined the European Union over recent years _ has declined gradually since peaking at 20.7 percent in February 2003.
