Conference calls are often impacted by market trends, geopolitical
conditions, news coming from conferences and economic releases.
(By Philip Holmes) Stocks finished higher on Wednesday, bolstered by a
big drop in oil prices, some decent earnings news and hope for a
finalized government plan to shore up the mortgage business. The Dow
Jones industrial average gained 29.88 points, to end the trading day at
11,632.38. The S&P 500 rose 5.18 points, for 1,282.18, while the Nasdaq
composite index gained 21.92 points to close at 2,325.98. Investors
were buoyed by decent earnings news from AT&T, PepsiCo and
ConocoPhillips. Drugmaker Pfizer saw its earnings double, to 41 cents
per share, versus the same period in 2007. Amazon was another big star.
The online retailer reported that its profits increased by 102% in the
second quarter versus the same period last year. Lawmakers in
Washington are close to passing a housing bill that would allow the
feds to insure up to $300 billion of mortgages. The White House is
giving a green light to the bill, which will provide some relief for
beleaguered mortgage funders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The biggest
boost to investor confidence came from sharply lower crude oil prices.
Oil ended below $125 per barrel on Wednesday, the result of increased
U.S. stockpiles of gasoline, with supplies up by 2.8 million barrels
for the week ended July 18, according to the U.S. Energy Information
Administration. Investors also heard of a congressional plan aimed at
limiting speculative investing in oil. The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly
approved a Democratic measure clearing the way for eventual
legislation. The bill would allow the government to set limits on
speculative trading in oil markets. On the negative side, the Fed
published its Beige Book. The report showed that economic activity had
slowed in most areas from the previous six week period covered. Of the
12 Federal Reserve districts, five eastern districts reported weakening
or softening economies, while four others showed sluggish or stable
growth. Cleveland and Minneapolis were the winners, with both showing
slight upticks in economic activity. Dallas showed steady or moderate
growth.
